1928 Andy Warhol was born as Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh.
1945 – 49 he studied at the Carnegie Insitute of Technology. 1952 he moved to New York. For the present there he was successfully as an commercial artist. 1957 he awarded the “Art directors’ club medal”. Impressed of Florenz on an journey through Italy he turned to art production. In a short time he became the most influential person in Pop-Art.
His works changed radically the current view on art and aestethics. Through kind of “retreat on creativity” he anticipated even then the tendencies of the late 60’s.
His works mostly dealt with the artificiality of the consumer society. Created at his “factory” mostly with methods of serigraphy they comprised the whole sector of the ordinary and trivial (soup-cans, cola-bottles, dollars and comic-strips) and certain images (Elvis Presley, Marylin Monroe, Liz Taylor, Jackie Kennedy, seris of car crashs, suicides and the electric chair).
Since 1963 he turned to shoot films like “Sleep” (1963 ;6h), “Empire” (1964; 8h).
In the recent past he created new works both portraits of popular persons (e.g. Willy Brandt; 1976) and a series of “hammer and sickle” (1976)
